My name is Barnabas Kerekes and I was very interested in the world of drawing and tattooing even as a child. At the age of 13, I tried to make my own tattoo machines from a rotating motor and a pen, with more or less success. Then my interest waned for 1-2 years. Later, during my high school electro-technical years, the world of drawing and tattooing started to interest me again. My girlfriend at the time was constantly sewing with a good tattooist, Séra Károllyal, and because of his work, I completely fell in love with this profession. Over time, I thought I could draw, although looking back, I wouldn’t have dared to start with my drawing skills at the time and my current mind. But then who cares? My stupid punk friends put together the money for a Chinese set and let it go! All of a sudden, I found myself going shopping to be able to buy quality gear. At the end of my high school years, my parents gave me a choice: I could either continue studying or go to work in the factory. Obviously, I chose the first option, because next to the factory, I would have had very poor prospects in terms of tattooing. I chose painting at PTE MK, I went to an artist camp, I drew and painted a lot, and the result was a result. I was accepted first, which is a big word, especially since I didn’t go to arts before and I completely lacked any pre-school education. I went with bright eyes and high hopes, but I had to be disappointed. The open day showed a completely different world than what I actually saw there every day. His one positive point was: the art anatomy. I often take advantage of this and to this day, if necessary, I take out Barcsay’s anatomical atlas for my drawings. A year and a half ago, I was able to go to painting, which I felt was more like a curator than a practical training, when I got an opportunity from Károly Séra: if I wanted to, I could go to work for him, I wouldn’t be my boss, the costs would be halved. This was a win-win deal for both of us: it’s good for me because I don’t have to deal with all the blood-sweating work required to open it, and it’s good for him that the costs are reduced. At this point I was in a serious dilemma:
the work, or the study at university, which I didn’t want to do anymore. In the end, I left the school and went on my own way. I started to get inspired, to get serious about making my own drawings and tattoos. I gradually tried to exclude copying and to solve the client’s problem individually. The closest to me are colorful tattoos, a comic book-like, fabulous world (neo-traditional), but there are also realistic requests.
